Understanding Period Poverty: Why It Matters and How We're Making a Difference

Period poverty is a silent crisis affecting countless young women worldwide, and Kenya is no exception. For too long, girls in rural areas of Busia County have faced immense challenges in managing their menstrual health, often forced to miss school due to a lack of access to menstrual hygiene products.

In the beginning of February 2024, we continued our ongoing battle against period poverty in Busia County, Kenya. In partnership with Padmad, we distributed 200 Deluxe Kits to young women in three middle schools across Busia County—Sijowa, Nangina, and Bukhulungu - who attended the educational event but did not receive a pad kit in June 2023. These kits, containing essential menstrual hygiene products, represent more than just supplies; they signify hope, dignity, and the promise of a brighter future.

In communities where menstrual hygiene is stigmatized and access to sanitary products is limited, girls often resort to using unhygienic alternatives like rags or leaves, risking infection and compromising their well-being. By providing these kits, we're ensuring that girls can stay in school and alleviate the financial strain on their families, who may struggle to afford necessities.

The impact of period poverty extends far beyond missed days of school. It perpetuates a cycle of inequality, hindering girls' education, and limiting their opportunities for personal and economic growth. By addressing this issue head-on, we're not just providing girls with the means to manage their periods; we're empowering them to break free from the constraints of poverty and pursue their dreams.

Our mission at The Collective for Orphan Care and Education (COCE) goes beyond providing aid; it's about fostering a future where every girl can thrive. Together with Padmad, we're making strides towards achieving gender equality and ensuring that no girl is left behind.
